Do you need cellular failover?

Cellular can be a primary link, a backup, or a bonded partner to a wired line. The three cost very different amounts and solve different problems, so the first decision is which one you actually need.

Backup, primary, or bonded

Failover keeps a cellular link idle until the wired line drops, then switches to it. Primary uses cellular as the only link, which suits sites with no wired option. Bonding runs both at once and blends them, which is what keeps a live video call up when one link wobbles rather than merely surviving a full outage.

Most businesses want failover. A moving vehicle or a remote site wants primary. A site that cannot tolerate even a brief stall wants bonding, and that is where SpeedFusion-class routers earn their price.

The antenna matters more than the router

A cellular router with the signal bars showing one bar will be slow no matter how good the router is. For a fixed site, an external MIMO antenna aimed at the tower usually adds more usable throughput than any change of hardware inside the building.

On a vehicle, a low-profile roof antenna that combines several cellular elements with GPS is the single biggest upgrade, because it gets the antennas out from behind metal and glass.

Read the modem class and the SIM story

Cat 4 LTE and sub-6 5G are very different ceilings; do not pay for a 5G plan into a Cat 4 modem. Dual-SIM routers matter because they let one box switch carriers automatically, so a single carrier outage in your area does not take the site down.

  • One wired line, downtime is costly: add cellular failover.
  • No wired option (rural, temporary, mobile): cellular primary, external antenna.
  • Live calls or payments that cannot stall: bonded multi-WAN.
  • Coverage patchy from one carrier: dual-SIM with automatic switching.

Watch the data plan, not just the hardware

A failover link that only runs during outages uses little data; a primary link streams everything. Size the plan to the role, and check whether the router reports usage so a runaway device does not burn the allowance in a weekend.
